Alberobello and Polignano a mare

The itinerary that began a few days ago with our visit to Matera, the town where men lived in caves, continues now in Apulia. We left, with good leverage, to discover one of the most beautiful and fascinating places in Murge: Alberobello. The characteristic town known all over the world for the famous "trulli".

Later, we visted Polignano a mare and it was impossible not to be amazed by this spectacular place of remarkable naturalistic and historical interest. We recommend to visit Matera, Alberobello and Polignano by organizing a single itinerary!

 Alberobello

trullo

After we parked our car we "jumped" on the balcony of "Santa Lucia", attracted by the constant departure of many hikers.

A unique scenario has opened to us: the endless succession of trulli, the typical old rural homes of Alberobello, showing one of the most incredible landscape mosaics in the world.

The history of trulli is very particular and lost in ages.

We must make a leap back in time, until an edict of the Kingdom of Naples that in the fifteenth century provided a tribute for every new urban settlement.

It was then that the Counts of Conversano (owners of the lands on which Alberobello now stands) imposed on the peasants who worked the land to build their houses without using mortar, so that they could be constructed as temporary buildings, easy to demolish.

The peasants, having only to use stones for the construction, found the simplest and most solid configuration: they built round houses with self-supporting dome roof, made up of overlapping stone circles.

The dome roofs of the trulli were then embellished with decorative pinnacles, whose shape is inspired by symbolic, mystical and religious elements. Depending on the quality of the pinnacle, it was possible to identify the value of individual houses.

trullo2

On the roof of the trulli were painted symbols that often assumed a religious meaning, such as the cross or pierced heart, and at other times represented zodiacal signs.

Pinnacle and symbol on the roof made up a kind of civic identifier.

In the historic Alberobello, and in particular the Monti Rione, you are really spoiled for choice in letting yourself admire these wonderful buildings.

In this neighbourhood, dominated by the Church of Sant'Antonio (also a trullo), you can observe the oldest trulli ever build.

In the central and seductive Via Monte San Michele there is an infinity of trulli among the best kept in Alberobello.

Walking along that road will make you feel the very unique emotions!

At Via Monte Pasubio, then, you can admire the 15th-century Trullo Siamese, a very charming building, characterized by the double dome.

trullo3

Alberobello is undoubtedly the "Trulli capital"; not by accident in 1996 the city was included in the Unesco World Heritage List.

The trulli are not only a particular example of ancient construction but are still used today as dwellings by the citizens of Alberobello.

In short, the trulli are not just a unique testimony of a tradition and civilization that has disappeared over time.

In fact, there are many families who still live in these beautiful buildings in the heart of the town.

It has been very interesting to visit a current trullo-home!

Moving a few meters from the Monti district, we reached the fifth district of the Aia piccola that begins at Piazza del Popolo. Right there you can visit the Trullo sovrano (Sovereign-trullo) and the Basilica dedicated to the Saints Medici Cosma and Damiano, patrons of the city.

trullo5

The Sovereign trullo is the largest trullo of Alberobello and is located in Piazza del Sacramento and is about fourteen meters high.

With its majestic conical dome stands impressive at the center of a group consisting of twelve cones.

This charming two-level trullo is nowadays used as a museum. It is possible to visit the interior, furnished with the furniture of the time.

A peculiar emotion for the environments of this characteristic building!

Inside, after passing the small bedroom on the left, you enter the large entrance deck, covered by a cruise ship, supported by a succession of small round arches, lying on two perimeter walls.

From this large room you can access to the large kitchen, communicating with the garden.

A door on the left leads to the premises that make up the first living nucleus, around which the rest of the home was built.

106

The typical dome of the trullo gice space for the first floor.

This floor was used as a guest room and as a place for weaving. The staircase, which leads to this environment, has been inserted in thick exterior wall.
A true genius of man!

The Sovereign-Trullo, with different entrances, was originally composed of twelve rooms.

The space of these compartments was further extended by the opening of niches and sticks that were expertly obtained in the wall thickness.

In a specific area of this small neighborhood stands the largest complex of contiguous and communicating trulli (fifteen), the oldest of which dates back to the eighteenth century.

This housing complex, identified as Casa Pezzolla by the name of the last owners, was bought by the Municipality of Alberobello in the 1980s and today it is completely restored. A seductive corner of Alberobello!

Also in the small Aia district, right in Piazza del Popolo, stands the Basilica dedicated to the Saints Cosma and Damiano, officially patron of Alberobello since 1854.

107

A wonderful neo-classical building with a Latin cross-shaped plant, whose facade is surrounded by two bell-bells with a sundial and a clock.
The whole facade is marked by long pilasters and corrugated columns with corinthian capitals and two smooth roman columns with composite style capitals

Inside the Basilica are kept the relics of the Cross of Jesus and the Saints, previously preserved within the Sovereign-Trullo.

The splendid apsidal frescoes shows the martyrdom suffered by Saint Cosmas and St. Damian until they ascended to heaven.

The charm of the trulli has not only breached our enthusiasm only during the visit of the characteristic buildings of the Apulian town.

Absolutely exciting and suggestive was also to taste the typical cuisine of the place inside a gorgeous place: a real trullo!

We had the pleasure of delighting our palates at the "L'aratro" (The Plow) restaurant.

This extraordinary restaurant is placed in a 1400's trullo and is located in the heart of the old part of Alberobello.

107

What better place to devote ourselves to the taste?

The interior of the restaurant features the characteristic stone conical structure.

Staying in Apulia was a magical experience. To make us "home" during this itinerary was "Bed and Breakfast Iris".

The property is located in Laterza (BA), downtown area, set in a picturesque frame of houses of the old hamlet.

Rooms worthy of praise, as well as all the environment furnished with elegance and sobriety.

And then what about the owner's welcome ? Extremely friendly, attentive to every need: from breakfast, to parking, to directions.

Recommended B&B!

Polignano a mare

Distinctive signs of Polignano at sea, better known as the "pearl of the Adriatic", are an exceptional crystalline sea and a series of rocks embroidered by overwhelming cavities excavated by the sea.

108

As soon as we arrived in this ancient seaside village we could not resist leaving an amazing bath at sea.

This portion of the Puglia coast deserves all our appreciation. Awesome sea! It's no coincidence, from 2008 to today, Polignano a Mare has always received the Blue Flag (among the cleanest sea in Italy).

After a pleasant morning to the seaside, we decided to visit Polignano: a delightful town situated on a steep rocky cliff, cut by a deep karstic gorge.

Due to the karst nature of the cliff, the site is particularly rich in fascinating marine caves that were already inhabited by primitive men.

These include the Palazzese Grotto.

We recommend to visit them thanks to the many "boat tours" organized several times a day with very frequent timetables.

From the Arch of the Gate, once a unique way of access to the town, you will enter an enchanted village, adorned with the 13th Century Matrix Church devoted to the Assumption.

The old town of Polignano at sea is very well preserved. It is crossed by a dense network of zigzagging alleys that has brought our attention to the typical houses and the small yards overhanging the sea.

109

The medieval village, perched on the high and jagged coast, has preserved all its unmistakable charm and has been able to revive intense emotions.

It is possible to find several arabic, byzantine, spanish and norman traces.

It is exciting to admire the remains of the four defense towers that cradled the ancient part of the town.

In the heart of the old village you can see several panoramic terraces from which you can enjoy some of the most picturesque views on the Adriatic Sea.

A peculiarity about Polignano: it was the birthplace of singer Domenico Modugno.

Walking along the promenade, you meet his (now famous) statue, almost assaulted by the many hikers who visit the city!

The coastline of this ancient city full of traditions is surely one of the most beautiful in Apulia, characterized by a multitude of hidden and wonderful coves.

The coastline of this ancient city full of traditions is surely one of the most beautiful in Apulia, characterized by a multitude of hidden coves and marvelous coves.

Historically considerable are the rests of Roman domination that are found in Polignano. Among them, we recall the bridge of Traiana, which is still viaable, which crosses Lama monachile.

Lama Monachile (or Cala Ponte) was built in the Bourbon age and rises on the ancient Traiana Street and is the most impressive panorama of the village. In the 15th century it was a commercial port during Venetian domination.

Our itinerary ends in the middle of the historical center of Polignano, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. We have our aperitif at one of the characteristic panoramic bars with outdoor tables in the center of the square dominated by the master church named Santa Maria Assunta.
